Retrospective characterization of HIV diagnoses in Ottawa, Hamilton and Toronto
Jasmine Ryu Won Kang
This project aims to retrospectively characterize new HIV cases and missed opportunities for preventative strategies, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), drawing upon clinical data from Ottawa, Hamilton, and Toronto. The study also aims to characterize late diagnoses, defined by low CD4 counts at the time of HIV diagnosis, and investigate the disparities in late diagnosis prevalence among different racial/ethnic groups and genders. Variables of interest include history of PrEP use, CD4 testing, viral load (VL) testing, and AIDS-defining condition (ADC) diagnosis, which were also separately analyzed according to priority population. A deeper understanding of these outcomes may provide insight into the current gaps in HIV prevention in Ontario.
